So you did your research and are planning to attend your first boxing classes in Los Angeles. Not knowing what to expect, you may be intimidated by the idea of looking silly during your workout. The first thing you need to do is to discard that though. Our boxing classes are judgment-free zones and we want you to feel comfortable.
Still, it might be useful to familiarize yourself with some of the basics of boxing so you can fully concentrate on your workout. Here are some common terms to know to help you feel a little more confident at your first boxing class:
The Fight Stance
This is your base stance which gets the body ready for movement and what you return to when you perform a move. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, with the knees slightly bent. Your left foot goes forward if you’re a righty, and your right foot goes forward if you’re a lefty. The hands come up to protect the chin, with hands folded into fists. Your front hand is a little farther from the face.
There are many different types of punches in box. When you take your first boxing classes in Los Angeles, the instructors will tell you the basics about them. You can also mimic what people around you is doing. Be patient and keep in mind that you will not ace the moves in your first classes. Just like any other workout, mastering the punches and other moves in box require time and practice. Still, most beginners say they feel the difference within the first couple of classes. They feel more powerful and confident and experience a different connection with their own bodies.
The basic punches in boxing are:
Jab: This is a straight punch from the front hand.
Cross: Straight punch from the back hand. This punch is more powerful, as it comes from farther away.
Hook: Rounded punch in an arching motion. In this punch, the arm stays parallel to the ground.
Uppercut: Rising, upward-motion punch from either hand.
